When the days get shorter and the air turns crisp, something magical happens in Powell, Ohio. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, already one of the top-rated zoos in the country, transforms into a dazzling winter wonderland of lights, music, and pure holiday joy.
Welcome to Wildlights — a Central Ohio tradition that’s been bringing smiles and sparkle to families for more than 30 years.
What Is Wildlights?
Every November through early January, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium decks its halls — and just about every tree, fence, and rooftop — with more than three million LED lights. The result? A breathtaking experience that combines the wonder of wildlife with the magic of the holidays.
Visitors stroll through themed light displays, watch animated light shows set to music, and sip hot cocoa while taking in the sights. It’s festive, family-friendly, and full of moments that make the season feel extra bright.
Can You See Animals During Wildlights?
Yes! Many of the animals are still out and about, especially those who enjoy the cooler weather. You can often see reindeer, camels, penguins, and big cats enjoying their evening routines. Indoor exhibits like the Asia Quest, Manatee Coast, and Discovery Reef Aquarium remain open, giving guests a warm place to explore between outdoor displays.
And of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus make regular appearances — complete with photo opportunities for the little ones!
What to Expect: Lights, Music & Magic
Wildlights isn’t just about looking at lights — it’s about the experience. Each year brings new features, but some fan favorites include:
The Sparkling Shores Light Show – Thousands of twinkling lights synchronized to music at Conservation Lake.
S’mores Stations – Roast marshmallows by the fire while taking in the sights.
Animated Tunnel of Lights – A walk-through light tunnel that makes for the perfect photo op.
The Polar Frontier and Winter Village – Where festive decorations and animals come together in true North Pole fashion.
The entire zoo feels alive with energy and excitement, making it one of Powell’s most cherished seasonal outings.
Warm Up & Refuel
After wandering through the lights, warm up with a cup of cocoa, mulled cider, or coffee from one of the zoo’s food stands. There are plenty of cozy spots to stop for snacks, and if you time it right, you can enjoy dinner at Safari Café or The Water’s Edge Pavilion, which both offer views of the shimmering lights outside.
Local tip: Bring reusable hand warmers and bundle up — the lights are even more magical when you’re toasty!
When to Visit
Wildlights typically runs from mid-November through early January, opening each evening around dusk. Weekends are the busiest, so for a calmer experience, try visiting on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening.
Parking is free for members, and combo passes that include Zoo + Wildlights admission are available online — it’s worth buying ahead to skip the ticket line.
Make It a Powell Holiday Tradition
For many Powell families, Wildlights isn’t just an event — it’s a yearly tradition. Parents bring their kids, grandparents tag along, and even groups of friends make it an annual outing. It’s one of those experiences that truly captures the heart of the holidays: togetherness, wonder, and community.
After your visit, stop by nearby Downtown Powell or Polaris for dinner, dessert, or holiday shopping — the perfect way to round out a magical evening.
